Focus on Northern Ireland

Anyone who has visited Belfast City Centre in recent months will have noticed a change to the skyline—the cranes are back in force. It is not just Samson and Goliath that are can be seen in action but the many cranes with familiar local contractors names gracing their jibs and towers. There is increased investment in student accommodation, the hotel, commercial, and even, the film industry. There are a number of major construction projects under way in Belfast at the moment which will substantially change the face of the city in the coming year. We have secured a large number of orders for projects in Northern Ireland. The works are a combination of all three trades and will require strategic planning and a change to our form of site management. Below are a few of the upcoming projects that we will be involved in over the next 12 months:

Maldron Hotel and McClintock Street Student Accommodation, Belfast: Student accommodation comprising 476 beds and hotel comprising 237 beds has been started by McAleer and Rushe with the demolition of the existing building. The development occupies a prime site in the heart of Belfast City Centre and the scheme will replace the old Met College. The scheme sits on a prominent corner of McClintock/ Brunswick St within an area known as ‘The Linen Green’.

College Ave Student Accommodation, Belfast: McAleer and Rushe have started on this purpose built student accommodation scheme on a 0.6 acre site providing 804 bedrooms, plus commercial space and car parking. The student development is comprised of welfare facilities, associated ancillary accommodation, external areas to include landscaped courtyards and an enclosed car park

Marriott Hotel, City Quays, Belfast:
Gilbert-Ash is the main contractor for the construction element of this £25m project. This is the first Marriott hotel in Northern Ireland and is situated at the City Quays with views of the Titanic building and the SS Nomadic. Due to open in early 2018 the hotel is expected to create 180 construction jobs and employment for approximately 115 people when complete.

Allstate Headquarters, Belfast: O’Hare & McGovern were awarded the Main Contractor for the Allstate Headquarters development. Recognised as the largest IT employer in Northern Ireland with over 2,000 employees, Allstate has offices in Belfast, Londonderry and Strabane. The 165,000ft² project includes the construction of a six storey office building with roof plant area on a 1.8 acre site to the rear of the former Maysfield Leisure Centre. The site is situated between the old Maysfield Leisure Centre, Translink’s Central Railway station and bound by the existing Lagan River and associated tow path.

Parkhall Integrated College, Antrim: Work is underway on a new school building for Parkhall Integrated College.  The new building will provide purpose built state of the art accommodation for 735 pupils, replacing the outdated accommodation on site. The school will house Parkhall Junior and Senior School and will be co-located alongside Antrim Grammar and Steeple Nursery School. Works include the demolition of the existing Parkhall School building, the provision of a new two storey school on the site of the existing Parkhall playing fields.
